The Giant Gong @ Sumangkap Village, Kudat

One of the place must visit in Sabah is Sumangkap Village. The whole villagers are gong makers. I never heard about this place before and it really widens my knowledge.

"Gongs are the most prevalent of Sabah's idiophones and are found throughout sabah. They are widely used by Kadazan Dusun, Rungus and Murut people. Gongs are made of brass or bronze. It has a thick with a broad rim and produces muffled sounds of a deep tone. Each gong has a name which denotes its sound or rhythm it plays. These musical names vary according to sub-dialect and village. The rhythm of the gong also represents emotion, sadness of a death or happiness of a festival or marriage."

From the map drawn in 2011, there were 66 houses in the village, it may be more now.

I thought this was the biggest in Sumangkap village but I'm so wrong! Continue read and you will know why....

At Sumangkap Village, visitors can watch skilled craftsmen at work making gongs in various stages.

The art of gong making in Kampung Sumangkap was inspired and initiated by a well-known local gong craftsman, Mr Mojunkob@Majabab B.Omlunru in 1968.

The giant gong in Sumangkap Village becomes Kudat's district attraction. There is 1 giant gong, 2 middle gongs and 2 small gongs. So it really looks like a husband with 2 wives and 2 children...hahaha

“The giant gong measuring 20 feet tall and weighing 980 kilogram is made of twenty pieces of 4' x 8' zincs. The giant gong making was inspired and fully funded by Malaysia Handicraft. It took approximately five weeks for four local gong craftsmen to complete the Giant Gong. (16 Sep to 20 Oct 2008). ”

I believe this is the largest gong in Malaysia. I never seen any bigger than this in Peninsular Malaysia.

I just hit with my hand with the 5 gongs at the field, all producing different sounds. It is so amazing to see such a giant gong which is bigger than a van. And if you are interested with the gong making, make sure you pay a visit to this place.
